My names Andy Squires, Im 40 and live on the border of Essex and Cambridge, UK.
I’ve been self employed as a freelance web developer now for over 14 years.
Where did it all start?
I started really getting into computers whilst taking a HNC in Business & Finance at Harlow College (Essex) in 1995. Alongside my studies over the two years I also took various courses in computers & IT, initially to aid my Business & Finance course it started to become far more of an interest than I had initially intended.
From 1997 to 1999 I took a two year course to become a Microsoft Certified Professional (MCP - internetworking Microsoft TCP/IP on NT4). Throughout the course I found more routes into IT and eventually had to decide whether to go down the hardware & networking route or the internet & website route.
Having already put together some websites in base HTML / CSS I had an in-sight into web development. It was around 1998 when a colleague asked me if I knew how to create dynamic webpage’s that I first became involved with ASP (Active Server Pages). I looked into it and never really stopped it wasn’t long before I became proficient enough to hook up an MS Access database with a website using ASP and start to do some dynamic things with the web pages.
By the end of 1999 I had become proficient in ASP and database integration along with client side & server side scripting, how to use the different technologies and the various capabilities of websites.
In 1999 I became an ASP developer with a company in Essex where I gained a lot of commercial experience with bespoke web applications and some very interesting projects involving Visual Basic, Flash, Director and various other programming / scripting languages to link up different systems.
From here I became self employed and started working with several people and companies which stabilised a platform from which I developed my career.
And the rest, as they say is history!
